IHCD FIRST PERSON ON SCENE AWARDS
Overview
The purpose of the First Person on Scene (FPOS) awards is to provide
immediate life support to the patient pending the arrival of definitive
pre-Hospital care. Effective interventions in the following areas have
been shown to make a difference to survival outcome, and are reflected
in the syllabi:
- airway stabilisation
- basic life support
- early defibrillation
- oxygenation
- circulatory support
Clinical endorsement for the FPOS framework and assessment will be through
the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care (Edinburgh), and whilst achievement of
units within the framework confirms that individuals have met both the
theoretical and practical requirements, this does not imply the ‘license
to practice’, the scope of which will be for the employing organisation
to determine.
Units will also only be valid for a limited period (depending on the
skill), and there will be periodic re-training and assessment for both
the practical skills and supporting knowledge. Assessment of supporting
knowledge for the FPOS awards will be through question banks, managed
by IHCD and delivered through accredited Centres.
The awards structure
There are two awards for First Person on Scene; each award will have
its own entry criteria, with the option for individuals to obtain further
